Dr. Christine Horner- Top foods to eliminate from your Diet

I’ve been talking about the wonderful Dr. Christine Horner.  Dr. Horner (like me!) believes that we are all in control of our bodies and that women need to be taught and educated about Breast Cancer prevention.

Check out this interview Dr. Mercola (from Dr. Mercola.com) and Dr. Horner

How to Starve Cancer Out of Your Body

According to Dr. Horner ‘ The most important thing is what you do or do not put in your mouth.’  This is great because we are in control of what we put in our mouth.

She teaches us that we can eat all the ‘good/preventive’ things in the world but this won’t matter if we are still cluttering our body with things promoting cancer growth.  In order to be effective we must STOP eating certain food items first and foremost…

Here’s a list of her foods to AVOID:

-Sugar  (Dr. Horner states, “To me, sugar has no redeeming value at all, because they found that the more we consume it, the more we’re fuelling every single chronic disease.  In fact, there was a study done about a year ago and the conclusion was that sugar is a universal mechanism for chronic disease. It kicks up inflammation. It kicks up oxygen free radicals. Those are the two main processes we see that underlie any single chronic disorder, including cancers. It fuels the growth of breast cancers, because glucose is cancer’s favorite food. The more you consume, the faster it grows.”)

-Processed Foods

-Soft Drinks

-Red Meat:  Dr. Horner, believes red meat from animals reared in confined animal feeding operations (CAFO’s) is also a MAJOR contributor to cancer. These animals are given antibiotics, growth hormones and other veterinary drugs that get stored in their tissues. Additionally, cooking the meat over high heat creates heterocyclic amines, which further add to its carcinogenic effect.

If you are eating red meat make sure you are buying from companies that care about how their animals are fed and raised.  Red Meat that is taken care of properly can be beneficial for our bodies.  Check out my post ‘Beyond Organic’ to learn more about this

You can also purchase healthy 100% Grass Fed, hormone-free, and antibiotic-free meat here:

-Bad Fats:

  • Animal fats from CAFO-raised animals
  • Trans fats
  • Partially hydrogenated or hydrogenated fats

Every cell membrane is made out of fat (even your brain). According to Dr. Horner, bad-fats in the diet are a major contributor to bad health and cancer.

By eliminating these 5 (even 2 or 3 of them) things from your diet will dramatically decrease your chance of Breast Cancer.

Stay tuned to learn about which foods and vitamins you can ADD to your diets.

Dr. Christine Horner- Breast Cancer Prevention!

The main focus of my Thermography practice is to help women learn that prevention is the key tool in the fight against Breast Cancer.

Dr. Christine Horner- board certified and nationally recognized surgeon, author, expert in natural medicine, professional speaker and a relentless champion for women’s health-  has that same message!

Dr. Horner started her medical career as a Plastic Surgeon.  She noticed that women were coming in younger and younger for breast reconstruction surgery and thought that there was something wrong with that picture.

Dr. Horner started researching and reading studies about the causes of Breast Cancer and realized that our American diet was the main cause.

“People that live in Asia have a very low incidence of breast cancer or prostate cancer… [W]e have the studies showing that if an Asian woman moves to the United States and adopts our American diet and lifestyle, within one generation her risk will match that of an American woman’s. “

One generation!

What are we doing wrong?

There are many simple things women can add to their daily routine that will have a dramatic effect on their health.

According to Dr. Horner: ‘It’s very simple. If you have a terrible diet and lifestyle and you do just one thing, you cut your risk in half. You do more than one thing and they will multiply up together.’

If it’s so simple why isn’t everyone doing it?!

Through my practice I love teaching women the tools to effectively prevent Breast Cancer (not to mention other forms of cancer!)

Suzanne Somers- Knockout: Interviews with Doctors Who Are Curing Cancer

In Somers’s book, Knockout: Interviews with Doctors Who Are Curing Cancer – And How to Prevent Getting It in the First Placeshe interviews doctors who are successfully using innovative cancer treatments.  The main message of her book is that our cancer treatment should focus on building up’ the immune system.
Somers’s argues that conventional cancer treatments such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy  take a destructive approach to treatment and ‘tear our bodies down.’  Instead, she suggest that we focus on lifestyle and nutrition changes to help build up our bodies to fight cancer.

In her book, Somers shows us that we have more than one option.  She teaches us about the risk factors associated with the popular harmful drug-based therapies used to treat cancer and explores some of the safe and natural alternative treatments that are currently available. Somers also shares many stories from those who have used these revolutionary methods, including herself.

Somers shares her personal choices and outlines an array of options from doctors across the country:
EFFECTIVE ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS
- Without chemotherapy, radiation and sometimes even without surgery.
INTEGRATIVE PROTOCOLS
- Combining standard treatments with therapies that build up the immune system
METHODS FOR MANAGING CANCER
- Outlining ways to truly live with the disease

Some of the doctors featured in this book are:

-Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski who has discovered a means of battling cancer by placing peptides, that otherwise are absent, into the bloodstream of patients. He also employs nutritional supplements and diet.

-Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez, another recognized physician in his field,  uses pancreatic enzymes and nutritional approaches including detoxification routines and individualized diets to treat cancer.

-Dr. Russell Blaylock, author of Natural Strategies for Cancer Patients. After 26 years of practicing neurosurgery, he now devotes his time to now supplying cancer patients and their families with the latest nutritional methods to build immunity and fight cancer

Since prevention is the best course  Somers also re-emphasizes the importance of lifestyle, diet, and exercise routine’s impact on your risk of developing cancer.

Another informative book.  I recommend that everyone reads this and is aware that they have options!

Breakthrough: Eight Steps to Wellness Review

Suzanne Somers wrote the controversial book, Breakthrough: Eight Steps to Wellness,  to share the cutting-edge information she learned on her journey to health through interviews with over a dozen doctors.

In her book, Suzanne shares her passion for being proactive and involved with her health.  She was sick of handing her body over to doctors and was determined to do her own research and make her own decisions.

Throughout the book Suzanne expresses the importance of looking at our bodies as a whole, rather than treating or masking individual symptoms.  She also teaches us that good health is all about PREVENTION!

Here’s a quick break down of the 8 Steps she shares in her book:

Breakthrough: 8 Steps To Wellness

1. Biodentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)

Suzanne Somers believes the secret to becoming ageless is BHRT.

In this book she explains that we age because of our hormonal decline and the idea behind BHRT is to put back the hormones that are lost through the aging process.

Suzanne discusses with many doctors the roles of hormones in your body and how BHRT can bring you back to a state of well-being.

2. Avoid Chemicals and Detoxify Your Body

There are tons of chemicals around us every day: the non-organic apple we had for a snack, the deodorant we put on this morning, the unfiltered water we drank all day, etc .  Chemicals and toxins can enter our bodies through our food, water, the air we breathe and our skin.  Many people don’t realize the vast impact these pollutants have on our bodies!

In her book, Suzanne explains how we can protect ourselves from these pollutants and limit our exposure.  She also teaches us how we can rid our bodies of them.

Here’s some of her suggestions:

  • Eat organic or at least make sure to wash your food
  • Remove toxic chemicals from your home
  • Pay attention to the air you breathe; use a filter system
  • Filter your water
  • Consider colonic therapy
  • Build your immune system
  • Work on keeping your lymph system healthy
  • Chelation therapy
  • Hyperbaric oxygen
  • Infrared sauna

3. Take Nutrition Seriously

Many of us try to eat properly but are in such a rush most of the time we grab for anything we can.  (I can’t tell you how many people I know eat Lean Cousines!)

In her book, Suzanne teaches us how important proper nutrition is.  ’We are what we eat’ and it’s essential that we fuel our bodies with the right foods if we want and expect to have the energy to live a productive, healthy and fulfilling life.

4. Create A Healthy GI Tract

According to her book, it is estimated that as much as 40% of the population suffers from some type of digestive stress. I can tell you from experience- about the same percentage of my patients have issues with this!

In her book, Suzanne breaks down how our digestive system works, the impact it has on our health and what we can do to keep it in good working order.

It’s so important that everything we eat gets flushed out.  When things start to build up our body gets polluted and this can enter our blood stream and causes disease.

Here are a few of her suggestions:

  • Eat organic if possible
  • Chew, chew, chew….!!!
  • Eat probiotic foods (fermented)
  • Take digestive enzymes
  • Eat more raw foods
  • Get plenty of fiber and essential fatty acids

5. Avoid Pharmaceuticals Unless Absolutely Necessary

I’m not saying prescription drugs are completely bad (they are useful in some situations) But I believe these should be used VERY sparingly.

In this book, Suzanne discusses some of the natural options we have available, rather than always relying on drugs with potentially harmful side effects.

6. Supplement Your Diet

Supplements are another controversial item.  Some people swear by them and others think they do nothing.

I recommend that all my clients take supplements- Many of the Doctors I refer to use supplements and believe that they have a place in supporting our body.  Supplements should be tailored to your needs.

The majority of our food grows in soil that is no longer rich in the proper nutrients, vitamins and minerals it once was.  Because of this, it is important to consider the possibility of supplementing our diet to obtain the essential nutrition to stay healthy.

Suzanne discusses supplements that are important to add to your diet and how these nutrients enhance our health.

7. Exercise Regularly

Get up and move!  Especially if your behind a desk all day!  We were meant to be active individuals and when we are active, we are much healthier.

Suzanne explains that exercise doesn’t mean to be at a gym: take walks, take the stairs, get up and stretch, move those legs!

8. Proper Sleep

As I discussed in my blogs about Melatonin, it is so important to have a proper’s night’s rest.  This is our body’s time to rest and recover.

I suggest reading this book for yourself.  There is so much useful information in it!  It can save your life.

And remember- it’s all about  PREVENTION!

Be Well,

Tammy Kohlschmidt RDH, CCT, CBP

Suzanne Somers- changing the way we think about Cancer Treatment…

I’m a big fan of Suzanne Somers (as you can see she’s listed in ‘My Favorites‘ Section.)  When Suzanne was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2001 she chose to do her own research and rejected conventional main-stream Western Cancer treatments.
Initially Suzanne listened to her doctor’s advice and tried  radiation.  After these treatments she felt even worse- extremely sick and worn out!  Suzanne was then  prompted to go on a mission to find another way.  She did a lot of research and interviewed the top cutting edge doctors
Suzanne is often ridiculed for her books and beliefs.   But this is only because people only know what they are exposed to and are used to a certain ‘way of things.’  Suzanne’s ideas are shedding light and teaching us that there is more than one option!
Her main message is:
Prevention and lifestyle choices are the building blocks and the foundation for health and wellness.
Suzanne has been quoted:
“I appreciate health care that gets to the root cause of our symptoms and promotes wellness, rather than the one-size-fits-all drug-based approach to treating disease,” explains Somers, 65. “I love maintaining an optimal quality of life — naturally.”
As I have written about in many of my past blog posts, prevention is key to fighting off disease and sickness.
Check out this informative interview Suzanne did with Harry Smith about her controversial books:
What are you thoughts?  Would you ever try an alternative cancer treatment?

Prevention is the key but if you are already diagnosed it’s great to have more than one option!

4 Simples Ways to Detox this year from Food Matters!

 Hi guys-

Check out this great article from Foodmatters.com about 4 easy ways to detox this year:

New years resolutions can be challenging at times so why not simply start by adding more good things into your diet as opposed to taking things out. Add these 4 simple detox tips to your day and you’ll be sure to feel great in no time. Here’s to a healthy and happy 2012!

1. Drink More Water

Too often we misinterpret thirst for hunger. Our signal for thirst may cause us to eat as we mistake it for hunger pains. Reach for water first and make sure you are well hydrated before eating any meal throughout the day. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Where possible make sure to drink your water at least 30 minutes before eating as this will allow time for the water to properly penetrate the cells of your body and hydrate your stomach lining in preparation for proper digestion. I like to add lemon juice and apple cider vinegar to my water or green it up with barley grass powder, wheatgrass powder, spirulina or chlorella. Yum!

2. Add A Green Juice To Your Day

Green juices are an amazing way to add life giving and detoxifying plant chlorophyll to your bloodstream. As Jason Vale says in the upcoming new ‘Food Matters’ film, “juicing is the ultimate fast food, it is a 15 minute nutrient express to health”. Some of my favorite and simple green juice recipes include:

Green Juice Recipe Ideas:

- Celery, lemon and pear (or apple)
- Celery, cucumber, lemon (leave the skin on) and pear (or apple)
- Celery, cucumber, kale, lemon and pear (or apple)
- Celery, cucumber, lemon, parsley and pear (or apple)

I also like to stir whatever green powders I have laying around the house into my juices to green them up even more! Again try barley grass, wheatgrass, spirulina or chlorella powders.

3. Add More Parsley and Cilantro (Corriander) To Your Diet

Parsley and cilantro (corriander) are very powerful natural green plant foods for detoxing heavy metals out of your body. Add these amazing herbs to juices, salads, soups and meals. Mike Adams from Natural News talks more about this also in the new upcoming ‘Food Matters’ film.

 Heavy Metal Detox Pesto Recipe:

  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 1/3 cup Brazil nuts (selenium source) or macadamia nuts
  • 1/3 cup sunflower seeds (cysteine source)
  • 1/3 cup pumpkin seeds (zinc, magnesium sources)
  • 1 cup fresh cilantro (corriander)
  • 1 cup parsley
  • 2/3 cup cold pressed olive oil
  • 4 tablespoons lemon juice (Vitamin C source)
  • Big pinch of sea salt and or dulse flakes to flavor

Soak the seeds and nuts over night to release the enzyme exhibitors. Process the parsley, cilantro (corriander) and olive oil in a blender until chopped. Add the garlic, nuts, and seeds, salt / dulse and lemon juice and mix until the mixture is finely blended into a paste. Store in dark glass jars if possible. It freezes well also if needs be. Enjoy!

4. Breathe Deep Into Your Abdomen

Deep breathing, where you fill your belly and expand your diaphragm downwards, is one of the most powerful exercise you can do to activate your lymph system which helps to detoxify your body. Think of your lymph system as your own personal garbage removal system (which most of us will need in full steam after the holiday season). Practise 10 deep slow breaths counting 4 seconds in, 8 seconds hold and 8 seconds out. You can do this exercize watching the TV, walking the dog, during meditation or whilst practising yoga.

According to the ‘Tao of Breathing’ up to 70% of our body’s waste products are eliminated via our lungs and the rest through the urine, skin and feces. When the efficiency of our lungs is reduced due to poor breathing less oxygen is available to our cells, it slows down the flow of blood which carries wastes from the kidneys and lungs. Our lymphatic system which fights off viral and bacterial invaders is weakened along with a slower digestive process.

Breathe long slow and deep in a mindful state as often as possible.

Here’s to a healthy, happy and wonderfully abundant 2012!

In good health,

James, Laurentine and the ‘Food Matters’ team.

Happy New Year!

Happy Holidays! My favorite traditions…

Every year during the Holidays I head down to Florida to visit my relatives.  This is a great tradition (not just being around family) but I get to be in the sun and get my vitamin D on.

During the Holidays many people stress themselves out about buying gifts, attending parties, or gaining weight.  The Holidays are supposed to be ‘the most wonderful time of the year.’  Not a time to stress!

We shouldn’t try to be perfect all the time.  (How boring?!)

What if I told you one of my favorite Holiday traditions is picking fresh lemons and oranges with my family and making Margaritas!

They are so delicious when you use fresh ingredients!

I  live by the 80-20 rule.  80% of the time I’m healthy and exercise and 20% of the time I do whatever I want.  (Lucky for me usually what I want is to treat my body with respect and love)

But I DON’T FRET or stress if I decide to enjoy a piece of chocolate or a alcoholic drink.   I chose to have it and I enjoy it.

I’m in control of my body and I’m making smart choices.  It’s empowering instead of draining.  Beating myself up only ends out causing more stress.

Relax and enjoy the Holidays!

Be Well,

Tammy Kohlschmidt RDH, CCT, CBP
