Top Breast Cancer Fighting Herbs and Spices

Issac Cohen, a doctor of oriental medicine, licensed acupuncturist and one of the leading authorities in the field of cancer treatment and Traditional Chinese medicine, reported in the book Breast Cancer: Beyond Convention, that several Chinese herbs including ginseng, show good anti-cancer activity against breast cancer.  He also points out that over 60% of chemotherapy drugs are made from natural products.

Research has also shown that the spice rosemary protects against the initiation of breast tumors.   When rats were given rosemary before the administration of breast cancer inducing chemicals, they developed 74% less tumors that the rats that were not given rosemary.

And according to researchers at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, extracts of several weak estrogenic herbs including hops, black cohosh, and vitex also inhibit the growth of breast cancer cells in the laboratory.

Using these herbs and spices in our foods will help us increase breast cancer fighting properties.

There are lots of herbs and spices on the market.  In the next post I will share with you some more beneficial ones to add into your diet!

Breast Cancer Tip- Eat more Herbs and Spices!

Many herbs and spices  are effective natural medicines against breast cancer (and other types of cancer also!)

7 Spices

The  use of herbs and spices dates back thousands of years.  Traditional Chinese and  Indian medicine  ( Ayurveda ) both evolved more than 5000 years ago and focused on using herbs and spices for the prevention and cure of disease.

Current research shows that breast cancer is four to five times lower in countries where large quantities of spices are eaten.

A study published in The Medical Journal of Australia  found that “culinary herbs and spices contain high concentrations of antioxidants and phytonutrients [plant-derived chemical compounds important to human health] and may provide long-term health benefits that even outweigh their short term taste sensations”.

We should all include these wonderful and tasty ingredients in our daily diets.

Stay tuned to learn which herbs and spices I recommend and are the best for you!

Self Care and Thermography

Many of us are so busy with our every day lives that we don’t take time for ourselves.  But taking the time every day to care for your body and mind will make you feel good about yourself and will expand into every part of your life.

Through my blog, I have given you numerous little and easy things you can implement into your life to improve your health and well-being.

Adding

-Green Tea

-Turmeric

-Skin Brushing

-Watching out for Inflammation

-And Thermography exams

We only have one body and need to treat it right.

I want to re-emphasize the importance of Thermography in self-care.

It has been drilled in many of our heads by countless doctors that every woman should get a mammogram every year after they turn 40.  What these doctors are not telling you is that mammograms are not as helpful or safe as you might think.

Mammograms expose you to approximately 1,000 times the amount of radiation you’d get in a chest X-ray.  This radiation is stored in your cells and accumulates to significant levels over time if you’re getting the annual mammogram.  Also, during a mammogram your breast are being compressed.  This can damage breast tissue and may even open cancerous tumors.

The American College of Physicians, the largest medical specialty group, recently questioned the benefit of mammograms.  They stated that the risks might outweigh the benefits.

These are pretty amazing and alarming findings.

I encourage you to also do your own research.  Find out your options and what is best for you health.  We have the power of choice.

Love your body and treat it well!

Turmeric and Green Tea have a synergistic effect.  They enhance the anti-cancer properties when you consume them together!

“Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food.”
–Hippocrates (460-377 B.C.)

I recommend taking them as supplements (so you know you are getting the right amounts) but you can also sprinkle some turmeric in your daily cups of Green Tea!

Turmeric and Breast Cancer

US researchers have found that curcumin (the active ingredient found in Turmeric which I discussed here)  helped stop the spread and growth of breast cancer tumor cells  in mice.  In addition, they found that Turmeric  helped the chemotherapy drug, Taxol, work more effectively.

Research has shown that Turmeric can block breast cancer causing toxins.  Turmeric also inhibits an enzyme called COX-2 that has been found to play a key role in the progression of breast cancer. The COX-2 stimulates tumor cells to divide, stimulates the growth of new blood vessels into the tumor, makes the tumor better at invading the surrounding tissues, and increases the risk of the tumor spreading to other areas of the body.  Turmeric is able to block all of these effects!

Who knew a little spice could be so powerful!?

Turmeric and Cancer

Scientists consider Turmeric the number one anti-cancer herb.

There are over 1,300 published studies that document the many healing properties of turmeric.  Research shows that it has the ability to reduce your risk of at least 8 different cancers: breast, lung, mouth, colon, liver, kidney, skin, and leukemia.

There are 5 main properties of Turmeric that cause this:

1) It breaks down toxins in your liver and prevents carcinogens from forming

2) Turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory

3) It’s a powerful anti-oxidant

4) It stimulates the immune system

5) Turmeric helps promote weight loss

Alert:: If you currently have cancer and are going through chemotherapy turmeric can help protect your organs from its damaging effect.

With all these amazing Cancer fighting properties I recommend incorporating Turmeric into your daily life!

Turmeric & Curcumin

Turmeric is from the underground stems of the plant Curcuma longa, a member of the ginger family.

The ingredient responsible for turmeric’s incredible anti-cancer properties is Curcumin (this is also what gives the spice that vivid color!)

An overview published in Advanced Experimental Medical Biology in 2007 states that, “Curcumin has been shown to exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and anticancer activities and thus has a potential against various malignant diseases, diabetes, allergies, arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease and other chronic illnesses.”

Wow!  It’s pretty impressive that people have been using Turmeric as medicine for over 4,000 years!

We got something right ;)
