Defy your DNA Part 2

As I mentioned last post, we have the ability through our lifestyle choices, to turn on genes that promote health and turn off those that promote illness and disease.  These switches are called the epigenome.

Our epigenome responds to 3 factors:

Nutrition

Toxins

Stress

All of these things are within our control and are affected by our lifestyle choices.

The science behind this have been proven by Dr. Dean Ornish.  Dr. Ornish has completed some amazing studies about the epigenome and he’s actually scientifically proven that by modifying our lifestyle we can turn off the expression of disease-causing genes.

Dr. Ornish published the first study showing that improved nutrition, stress management techniques, walking and psycho-social support all work together and can actually change the expression of over 500 genes in early stage prostate cancer.

You won’t believe how easy these lifestyle choices were-

-He incorporated exercise, yoga, and meditation for an hour everyday

-He had a social support network

– And he emphasized good nutrition (eating a low-fat diet based primarily on fruits, vegetables, beans, and vegetable protein.)

These are all things that are in our hands!

‘We are no longer victims of our genes, but masters of our fate.’ -Dr Bruce Lipton
