Changing the Focus of Breast Cancer Activism

As I perviously stated, I support anything that promotes women taking time for themselves and awareness of Breast Cancer.  But I think it’s time we move beyond awareness and start focusing on why so many women, an alarming 1 in 8, are being diagnosed with this disease.

Scientists are beginning to close in on the link between environmental toxins and breast cancer, but most of the national focus remains on drug treatments rather than prevention of this disease.

One thing is clear from this scientific evidence, our risk of breast cancer is increased by exposures to chemicals in our everyday environment (chemicals in our food, our products, our air and our water.)  And we can control these exposures!

There are great programs such as ‘Prevention is Power‘ and the walk ‘Prevention is the Cure’.  Both of these organizations are designed to educate women on the positive steps they can take to significantly reduce their risk of breast cancer. Here’s a few suggestions that I also advocate from them:

* Support research into the environmental causes of breast cancer

* Avoid exposure to pesticides and toxic cleaning products

* Store food in glass, ceramic or safe plastic containers

* Avoid synthetic hormones in dairy and meat

* Eat organic fruits and vegetables (without pesticides)

These are all easy thing you can do for you and your family every day!  The US has one of the highest rates of Breast Cancer-  Don’t let this statistic be you.  Prevention and early detection can save your life!

Be Well,
